Personality:

'Nah nah nah-nah!' - Riki after dodging an easy attack

When you first see Riki, the last thing you think that he’s a forty year old ‘man’. Even in canon, the entire cast was baffled by this revelation, despite seeing his wife and some of his children. With his mannerisms and his small, fluffy appearance, it’s not hard to see why Riki is considered childish. Nopon dialect is generally simple, and they tend to refer to themselves in third person and substitute big words for simpler, more nonsensical ones - Telethia becoming Dinobeast, names being shortened, to state a few examples - but this isn’t the main reason why Riki is seen as immature. Nopon in general are on par with humans/Homs and most of them are not unintelligent. However, despite having some moments where he shows surprising maturity, Riki acts like a five-year-old most of the time, bearing a child-like innocence to him, so much so that it’s even one of his skill trees in the game. This - in addition to having tantrums, wanting impossible things (like for Reyn to remove an entire mineral deposit to pay off Riki’s family debt for him), being blissfully ignorant to most situations, and avoiding responsibility - is why he’s childish, and he in fact gets called out by other Nopon for acting like a ‘Littlepon’.

Naturally, as someone who is childish, Riki has a sense of youthful innocence to him. He’s very literal-minded, both from being book dumb and simply being 'Riki', tending to take things at face value. For example, during battle, Reyn will shout out when the party is doing well: “Now we're getting started!”, but Riki will respond with "But Riki already started…". Further examples can be seen in his Skill Tree; skill trees are traits characters can develop over time and equip, in order to make them stronger. These trees are named after traits that relate to each character. Along with Vivacity and Flexibility, Innocence is one of Riki’s starting skill trees (Cowardice and Heroism being unlockable), and the name of each trait relates to Riki's innocent desire to see and affect the world. ‘Adventure Time!’, ‘Learning all the time!’, ‘Explore Time!’…The last skill is ‘Dream of Money’, which is more related to how he really needs to pay off that family debt. He really thinks he can do it…

Perhaps if his children hadn't inherited his gluttony, he could pay it. Like many small, cute heroes, Riki is a big eater. It’s a trait of his species, but he and his Hom friend Reyn are both the gluttons of the group. Riki is often commenting he’s hungry, to the point where one of his fainting/dying quotes is “Riki so… hungry…”. Food and Riki often walk hand in hand: "Riki's job is eating.” In cutscenes, particularly in the Eryth Sea and the Fallen Arm areas but also in the end cutscene, he fishes and cooks food for himself and his friends. Many of his Heart-to-Hearts with his friends involve food (such as talking to Sharla about how he eats flowers and about cooking fish with Melia). His love for food even comes into game play. In order to speed up gaining affinity with Riki, players can often gift him insects, which he eats (there’s even an achievement for giving him thirty!). As a consequence of this, Riki often thinks with his stomach, to the point where he can be quite tactless. After the death of Melia's father, Riki was confused why everyone looked sad, and said he was sad when he was hungry too and asked if that was the problem.

This tactlessness is not a one-show trait either; as much as Riki is innocent, that innocence has led to the wrong words at the wrong time. In the same breath used to comment on the death of Melia's father, he states he’s 'bored'. This is not because he’s insensitive, but rather that he’s bad with timing things, and is oblivious to the mood at hand. Sometimes he remains oblivious, even after a call out, but a few times it finally gets through to him completely, and he is deeply affected. It should be noted that - much like Riki himself - this trait is often also played for laughs: Riki's response to Dunban saying "I can feel my power returning to me!" during battle is "Power sound like sour. Sweets are better”, but the moments that he can be tactless in serious situations can overshadow his kind and empathic nature. Riki does what he wants, even when the situation doesn’t call for it -and according to NPCs and other quest conversations, he always has, as many state that Riki is illiterate and that he slept through most of his classes.

Riki is a Nopon that acts on instinct and whim, simply put. He does what he wants, whether it is to comment on the first thing that comes to mind or something else entirely. If he sees something interesting, he’ll go get it. If he’s hungry, he’ll go eat. If he’s tired… he’ll probably complain until his friends let him sleep. Riki runs primarily on his wants and desires, and if his brain tells him to go for something (regardless if it’s a good idea or not), he’ll go for it. Riki acts first and asks questions never. His temper flies without a second thought, and he’ll yell if he’s angry regardless of the situation or who he’s with. He’ll wander off if he wants to, only after a brief announcement for his friends’ sake. An example of this last one in particular is notable, as it can be seen when Melia was separated from the party after an announcement that she was to be the next emperor of the High Entia. Even though he should have waited, Riki just told everyone he wanted to find and talk to Melia - and naturally, did just that.

Another reason for his actions in seeking out Melia can perhaps be seen in his more mature traits. There are many scenes depicting Riki’s gentler side, and while he often acts like a hyperactive, ill-mannered child there are times where he shows a milder and softer side. Riki has a deep love for Makna Forest and his friends. This appears in practically every high-level Heart-to-Heart with Riki, where the player can hear him talk about his friends and family. Despite his big talk and his will to battle, Riki doesn’t really want to hurt anyone. He’s not out for revenge like the rest of the party, he just wants to look out for everyone else and make the Bionis a better place, whether it be by giving hugs to Melia (in cutscenes and out of them, especially when Melia’s ‘tension’ is low), giving his friends good advice (talking to Dunban about his sister), or revelling in his ‘comic relief status’ (which he is well aware of) and making his friends smile.

His gentle nature is best seen in his role as a father - as the 'protector' of the family. Riki is a very paternal parent; the whole reason why he’s put to the group for the second time is because his children have eaten enough to double his debt to the community, and Riki doesn’t blame them (rather he just gets angry with the chief). Whenever you talk to any of Riki’s NPC children, they talk about how they’re rooting for their dad. One of his daughters even says that she misses how her dad ‘twirls her to sleep’ and wishes he’d come home soon. When Riki talks about his children himself, it is clear that he cares for them as any good father should - however, Riki is paternal not only toward his children but toward his friends as well. With the exception of Melia, he is the oldest of the group in physical years, and while Dunban and Sharla are more the ‘parents’ of the group, in their Heart-to-Hearts, Riki gives them advice too. The most evident instance of his paternal love for his friends is in his Pink Affinity conversation with Shulk. Shulk says that Riki is the luckiest Nopon ever because he has a family to go home too after their adventure, but he has no one. So naturally, Riki tells Shulk that he can come back to the Nopon Village and be part of his family, that way Shulk would have a lot of family members to come home to. This is not the only occasion where Riki had suggested all his friends move in together and be a family either. In a conversation with Dunban, he tells Dunban that all of his family should move in with Dunban and Fiora after their adventure was over in order to stay together (Dunban appreciates the sentiment but teases Riki about needing money to expand the house and asks if Riki would add that on top of his debt, changing his mind very quickly.) Riki loves his family, and Riki’s friends are his family too. This is clear from how he talks about them, and how he protects them as well.

Under normal circumstances, Riki is quite cowardly. One of his skill trees is named 'Cowardice', and to support that, he is a big, furry chicken. Despite talking big, Riki despises dangerous situations and will try talking his way out of them, to minimal degrees of success. For example, as soon as the Nopon Chief brought up that he was to fight a Telethia, the ‘Heropon’s’ response was to cry out very loudly: “But Dinobeast is big and scary!”. Riki’s first answer to everything is to suggest leaving (even if he doesn’t actually make any movement to do that). Once again, this trait bleeds into his battle quotes… or rather his ‘Fleeing’ action. Usually when you select to run from a battle, the party leader will suggest a tactical retreat, or something along those lines. Riki’s quote stands out, and not in a very good way for someone who claims he’s a ‘Brave Heropon’: “Riki scared! Friends run!”

As afraid as he is, even his retreat quotes display his paternal and protective nature toward his friends. Riki is a Papa Wolf to not only those whom he knows, but others too. He is someone who is protective over children, as seen in a side quest where a mother lost her child and the group has to find them. One of the reasons why Riki’s 4th skill tree is Cowardice and his 5th one is then Heroism is because of his friends that he would protect with his life - friends he can be heroic for, despite his cowardice. This is shown primarily through the Telethia attack at Colony 6, the fight against Mumkar and any other fight where it seemed like the party would lose, as he didn’t back down in any of these situations. Not once does Riki flee a fight, despite being known as a scaredy-cat. He’ll burn, freeze, poison and steal from any monster who opposes him, and tank all the hits for his teammates. “Riki protect sidekicks”, after all!

Not that Riki's friends are 'sidekicks' of course, but Riki is a natural storyteller. He’s a glory hog, a showman who enjoys the spotlight. From his first appearance it’s evident that Riki is utterly in love with the idea that he is the ‘All-important Heropon’, even though both he and every other Nopon knows that the Nopon chief chooses a Heropon based on the amount of debt to the village a Nopon has accumulated and forces them to do the most undesirable tasks. Despite that, Riki loves the title and plays up to the role of ‘Hero’ as much as he can, even if it means having to stretch the truth a little: “Riki can win by himself” is something everyone knows is impossible, after all. An instance of this is when the group defeats the Telethia in Makna Forest - Riki boldly declares that he had done most of the work and defeated the beast (credit that should have gone to Melia and/or Shulk), much to the crowd’s delight. His after battle quotes also imply that he’s quite the spotlight stealer, often congratulating his ‘sidekicks’ for a job well done, which is usually played for laughs. But that’s really just part of Riki’s character: the small, funny fluff ball with a big heart, that we all love and want to cuddle.
